INNER VOICES, from R. Carlos Nakai, marks a return for
the flutist to some of his early works on the Canyon
Records label. The twist - this time around, Nakai has
employed the use of an orchestra (produced by Billy
Williams) to flesh out the pieces, giving them a new more
classically-based sound. As a result, songs like
"Canyon Reverie," which in its original
incarnation was a plaintive solo flute piece, now is a
lush, stirring work that packs quite an emotional punch.
Even purists, who may at first be lukewarm to the idea of
a Native/classical hybrid will likely find the
recreations to be not so much a departure from but an
amplification of the original moods created in their
tradition-based counterparts. Among the album's
highlights is a creative take on the hymn "Amazing
Grace," the slightly mysterious "Winter
Solstice," and the adagio-like title track.
